Treatment for Substance Use Disorders

What are Substance Use Disorders?

Not everyone who uses a substance has a Substance Use Disorder. Substance Use Disorder develops when someone repeatedly uses a substance despite harmful consequences, as well as describing an inability to control their substance use (Source: American Psychiatric Association). Addiction is another term for Substance Use Disorder. People who have a substance use disorder can experience unpleasant or dangerous physical and psychological effects when they try to stop using the substance (Source: American Society for Addiction Medicine).

People who have Substance Use Disorder can benefit from different treatments that help reduce the effects on their body, reduce or stop the substance use, and address any underlying issues they may have.
