A statute is a written law passed by a legislative body, such as the United States Congress (federal law) or the New York State Legislature (state law).
A statute begins with a bill proposed by a legislator, which must be introduced in both houses of the legislature before signed at the executive level (federally, the president of the United States; statewide, the governor of the state).
